We first watched the following video:

Here is what we said:

-This is Obama’s speech about same –sex marriage.
He tries to explain his opinion about this controversial subject.
He supports the idea of same-sex marriage as for him everybody should be have the same right.
He hesitates first because he thought civil union was sufficient.
However he eventually changed his mind he decided it was time to go ahead
It is a very risky speech as it could make people vote against him as the USA are a quite puritan country.

Vocabulary:
Risky: Risqué.
It was time to go ahead: Il était temps d’aller de l’avant.

Then we finished our work on the text. Here is what we said:

 -The author remembers when he was a child and what he felt at the time in a cinema where he saw a film that impressed him.
He regrets the fact that he doesn’t feel the same emotions anymore and tries to explain understand why.
The main reason is probably because he has grown up and has lost his sense of magic.

Grammar and vocabulary:
Delusions (l.9) = Nom au pluriel = Désillusions.
Shabby (l.16) = Adjectif qualificatif de cinema =  Mal propre.

Group 1 : Felicia’s attitude

Felicia is :

- desperate (l.9)

- crying (l.2-l.31)

- scared – her husband will hurt if her knows she told Vinny he is the boss of the Mafia.

She is a submissive wife. She was being a little dramatic for Vinny. She was clearly fearful and upset. Felicia is an obedient wife.

Group 2 :  Vinny’s reaction

- He is shocked, he asks his mother what’s happening, why she is crying.

- He doesn’t understand that he’ll be the next Don. He feels betrayed by his family.

Vinny is puzzled, bewildered (perplexe).

Group 3 : Consequences of the Don’s decision

Vinny :

 - will stop school

- will become the new godfather

He will become a criminal even if he doesn’t want to.
